General Notes:
|
Queen Elizabeth II, with Prince Philip, visited Edmonton on July 21, 1959 on her first tour of all the provinces and territories of Canada since her Coronation in 1953. Again, Edmonton was prepared for a grand welcome. City workers worked tirelessly to beautify the street, while fans of Her Majesty the Queen, with Edmonton Journal itineraries in tow, knew exactly when and where to find her. Arriving by train at the downtown CNR station at 10:00AM, the Queen and Prince began the day with a welcome from mayor William Hawrelak at City Hall, then were honoured in a ceremony at Coronation Park where the Queen helped to plant an elm tree commemorating her accession to the throne (notes by Edmonton’s Historian Laureate Shirley Lowe)
